Introduction
A common question from our customers is if they have to use SSIS PowerPack or ODBC PowerPack for their projects. In this article, we will help you to decide this question.
When to Use SSIS PowerPack
If your company already has an SSIS license or if you need to work with ETLs, the answer may be obvious. It will be easy to learn the tool if you already have experience with it. Learning ZappySys SSIS PowerPack will be a straightforward process.
If you need to export, and import data on a regular basis and automate the process it could be also a good choice.
If you do not have SSIS yet, you may need a SQL Server license that comes with SSIS as well.
If you do not have an SQL Server license and still like to use SSIS then you can use Azure Data Factory (SSIS-IR) - Pay As You go type of service. It doesn't require you to invest heavily in SQL Server Licensing and you can still use SSIS in Cloud.
When to use Zappysys ODBC
If you are working with Python, C#, Java, PHP, or another programming language, you may want to connect to REST API or a Web Service or XML file, or JSON file using this language. In this case, using the ZS ODBC PowerPack can help you.
If you already have a tool that can connect to ODBC, you can take advantage of the tool and extend the connection sources using ODBC.
For example, if you have any of these tools, you can take advantage of the ODBC PowerPack:
- Power BI.
- Tableau.
- Qlik Sense.
- Excel.
- Informatica PowerCenter.
- SQL Server.
- SSAS.
- Visual Studio.
- Microsoft Access.
- Pentaho Kettle.
- Etc.
In other words, if the tool supports ODBC, you can use our tool and get online data. And query the sources online.
Conclusion
So here is the summary of when to choose ODBC PowerPack or SSIS PowerPack
Choose SSIS PowerPack if
- You like ETL based approach with more UI elements / prefer drag & drop
- You are using SSIS as your Primary ETL tool and like to enhance out-of-the-box functionality by adding 70+ more Tasks / Components
- You are OK with a Job-based approach (e.g. Run Integration every hour / daily / weekly using Job)
- You need many Tasks and connectors which are not part of ODBC PowerPack (e.g. Email Task, Upsert Destination, SFTP Task, Redshift)
- Your Team is already experienced with SSIS and prefers to use that way only
Choose ODBC PowerPack if
- Using SSIS is not an option
- You need more real-time data (in your report / SQL Server / App) rather than ETL based approach (i.e. Run job hourly, daily, weekly etc)
- You are more comfortable in SQL Server Query Language and like ZappySys Datagateway Linked Server Approach
- You are using Reporting Tool / Programming Langauge / BI App which supports direct ODBC connection for more real-time data which ZappySys Driver can do
- Your Vendor supports JDBC driver only but your App support ODBC only so ZappySys JDBC-ODBC Bridge Driver can be used.
