Google SMTP - The SMTP server requires a secure connection or the client was not authenticated. The server response was: 5.7.0 Authentication Required.

Problem

Sometimes if you are using Google SMTP or GMAIL SMTP in SSIS Send HTML Email Task and suddenly you start getting below error. 

Test Failed - The SMTP server requires a secure connection or the client was not authenticated.
The server response was: 5.7.0 Authentication Required.

 

Cause

From May 30, 2022, ​​Google no longer supports the use of third-party apps or devices which ask you to sign in to your Google Account using only your username and password.

Important: This deadline does not apply to Google Workspace or Google Cloud Identity customers. The enforcement date for these customers will be announced on the Workspace blog at a later date.

Create the application-specific password for the ZappySys App and need to use that App password in the SMTP connection.

Create & use App Passwords

If you use 2-Step-Verification and get a "password incorrect" error when you sign in, you can try to use an App Password.

1. Go to your Google Account.
2. Select Security.
3. Under "Signing in to Google," select App Passwords. You may need to sign in. If you don’t have this option, it might be because:
   1. 2-Step Verification is not set up for your account.
   2. 2-Step Verification is only set up for security keys.
   3. Your account is through work, school, or other organizations.
   4. You turned on Advanced Protection.
   
   
4. At the bottom, choose Select app and choose the app you using > Select device and choose the device you’re using > Generate.
   
5. Follow the instructions to enter the App Password. The App Password is the 16-character code in the yellow bar on your device.
   
6. Tap Done.
7. That's it use that app password in the SMTP Connection as Password and you will be able to Test Connection Successfully and also able send the email.
